“Supreme Court Sets Deadlines for Disqualification Proceedings: Maharashtra Speaker Directed to Decide Shiv Sena MLAs by December 31, 2023, and NCP MLAs by January 24, 2024”

The Supreme Court has directed the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to rule on disqualification proceedings against rebel Shiv Sena members by December 31, 2023, and against NCP MLAs by January 24, 2024. This decision came in response to an affidavit filed by the Maharashtra legislative secretariat, which suggested a delay in the proceedings due to Diwali vacations and the winter session of the assembly. The court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, emphasized that procedural delays should not hinder the resolution of disqualification petitions. The case was initiated by Sunil Prabhu, seeking an expeditious decision on pending disqualification petitions against rebel Shiv Sena legislators.
