“State Pollution Control Meter at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) Records ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality at 7 am today

Mumbai grappled with varying levels of air pollution, as per the latest data released by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)-India. Despite an overall ‘moderate’ Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 149 at noon, pockets within the financial capital witnessed a downward spiral, landing in the ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ categories.

The state pollution control meter, positioned at the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), revealed a concerning ‘very poor’ air quality label as early as 7 am, prompting health advisories to be issued in the vicinity due to the alarming decline in air quality.

Notably, the situation was more pronounced in specific localities. In the prominent Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the AQI climbed to 200 by 9 am, signifying a significant deterioration. However, Colaba and Borivali East managed to maintain a ‘moderate’ air quality status, clocking in at 151 and 141 on the AQI scale, respectively.

With such disparities across different regions, Mumbai’s struggle with air quality concerns has heightened, calling for prompt and targeted intervention to safeguard public health and the environment.”

As per the latest insights from the Central Pollution Control Board, a series of key locations in Mumbai, namely Malad, Sion, Chembur, Deonar, Bandra Kurla Complex, and the Kherwadi junction, have emerged as persistent epicenters of substandard air quality, warranting immediate attention and remedial measures.

In a bid to curb the exacerbating air pollution in the bustling metropolis, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation took decisive action on Wednesday. Notably, the demolition of four chimneys belonging to gold and silver smelting units in the illustrious Kalbadevi and Zaveri Bazar region of South Mumbai transpired as a strategic move. This concerted effort aims to alleviate the atmospheric burden posed by these units.
